Toyota Material Handling, U.S.A., Inc., offers a full line of high-quality lift trucks sold under the Toyota brand. Toyota has been the number-one selling lift truck in the U.S. since 2002. Most of the Toyota lift trucks sold in North America are manufactured at Toyota Industrial Equipment Manufacturing (TIEM) in Columbus, Indiana, which opened in 1990 and currently employs 930 people
The two-hour tour will highlight some of the cultural and production practices and philosophies that Toyota has successfully used since the first lift truck was built at TIEM. Two senior managers will lead the walking tours and provides examples of the daily challenges and rewards of the Toyota Production System. Starting with the pillars of “Jidoka” (automation with a human touch) and Just-in-Time you will see how many of today’s popular lean tools are being used to help Toyota move the organization towards its highest goals of:
- One by One Production
- Zero Quality Defects
- The Elimination of Waste
- Respect for People
You will learn about
Toyota’s shop floor leadership, its Kanban method to enable part deliveries every 38 minutes, and how improvement ideas are determined and worked on. The tour will conclude with a no-holds-barred question and answer session.
Tour Limit: 50 people. A second, identical tour will be offered the same day, 9:00–11:00 a.m., if demand warrants it.
Transportation: Tour attendees will depart from the Marriott by bus at 12:30 p.m. Following the tour, the bus will drop attendees of at Indianapolis International Airport by 4:45 p.m., before returning to the Marriott.

HardingPoorman Group (HPG) is one of North America's leading commercial graphics providers. It was founded in 2003 with the acquisition of several local companies. Altogether, six companies have been placed under the HardingPoorman banner, each maintaining its own identity, specialized workflow, and entrepreneurial management team. HPG’s broad range of services now extends beyond commercial offset printing to printing on plastics, print-on-demand, 1:1 direct marketing, digital storefronts, signage, mailing, and fulfillment.
HPG is most proud of its culture, which has allowed it to sustain a vibrant continuous improvement program and successfully integrate new companies. The company’s stated business purpose is “to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our employees.” To that end, it publishes a weekly employee newsletter, supports continuous learning, routinely shares financial information with the 150 employees, and provides quarterly bonuses based on waste reduction along with a semi-annual profit sharing bonus.
HPG has a quality management system based on ISO 9001 quality standards. On top of that, it uses a variety of Lean tools as it strives for perfect on-time delivery, 2% or less spoilage as a percent of sales, 100% client satisfaction, and a steady reduction in the number of nonconforming incidents. It the most recent quarter, the company boasted a 98% on-time delivery, a 98.8% client satisfaction ratio, and less than 1.0% spoilage.
HPG has attended the CI Conference in the past; it is excited to show off the many facets of its quality program. Tour attendees will gain insight into HPG’s culture, see 5S and other Lean tools in action, learn how it has dramatically reduced spoilage, and witness employees using its intranet for reporting quality issues, submitting improvement ideas, placing maintenance requests, reviewing MSDSs, and accessing electronic production tickets.
